Two more stations will be deployed in Lake Shiwha by September, 2002

Sponsored by the Ministry Of Marine Affairs & Fisheries. Centennial Technology is going to put in place two more continuous monitoring platforms in Lake Shiwha by September, 2002. The monitoring stations will provide information on the status and trends of water quality. Water pollution of Lake Shiwha climbed to an alarming level after a dam construction project was completed in January 1994. The concentration of COD increased from 5.9 mg/l in 1994 to 17.4 mg/l in 1997. The high levels of nutrients evidently enhanced phytoplankton growth, thus depleting dissolved oxygen in the bottom water. Anoxia occurred in the water column during the summer season. The water quality of the freshwater reservoir could not be controlled through any countermeasures, because increasing levels of nutrients were entering the waters. The Korea Water Resources Cooperation began to discharge lake water into the sea to mitigate that condition. The automatic monitoring systems which will be installed at Lake Shiwha will present real-time data on pollution status and pollutants load.
